Tartine Santa Monica

TARTINE SANTA MONICA

LOCATION: SANTA MONICA, CA
OWNER: TARTINE PARTNERS, LLC
ARCHITECT: BOOR PROJECTS

This 3,500 SF former mortuary and Designated Historic Landmark was transformed into a full service bakery + restaurant. The building’s historical status made construction challenging due to the need to preserve existing finishes, detail and design and adhere to preservation guidelines. The building was awarded a Preservation Award from the Santa Monica Conservacy for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the building. The adaptive reuse included:

  • Installation of new stained glass windows to comply with Title 24
  • Replacement of wood floors with red terracotta tile
  • Installation of cross-shaped lighting fixtures on the ceiling
  • Application of modern-looking paint that complements the design + style of the historical chapel
  • All-new mechanical system and improvement of existing electrical system with a transformer upgrade
  • Installation of new grease interceptor, fire protection system and alarm system

The San Francisco based restaurant is famous for award-winning breads made with stoneground flours, pastries and café salads, sandwiches, Coffee Manufactory and more. The Santa Monica location focuses on these basics, along with wines by the glass and bottle, cocktails and non-alcoholic concoctions.

Howard CDM is also the general contractor for Tartine’s Silver Lake and Sycamore locations, as well as The New Manufactory at the Row. Howard CDM provided pre-construction and construction services for all four locations.
