VESPERTINE

LOCATION: CULVER CITY, CA
OWNER: CHEF JORDAN KAHN
ARCHITECT: ERIC OWEN MOSS ARCHITECTS

Chef Jordan Kahn had a vision to turn a 2,700 SF, 3-story building into a dining experience unlike any other. With ticketed entry, a musical score accompanying each floor and exterior reminiscent of a waffle, Kahn’s vision was to transport guests to another planet; Howard CDM welcomed the challenge to execute his vision.

The waffle texture became a reality with shrouded steel and glass curtain walls that twist as they ascend, creating the twisted tower shape. The acoustical plaster ceilings mitigate sound in an otherwise hard-surfaced environment. The restrooms, elevator, mechanical shaft on the façade and core of the building all feature Dekton wall cladding. With minimal area in the ceilings to run utilities, the construction process was similar to assembling a Swiss watch; there could be no margin for error.

The 2,700 SF outdoor lounge area features a garden with concrete steps and seating to be used for casual dining and cocktails. The art piece at the front of the building creates cacophonous grating sounds to set the ambiance prior to entry. Fewer than two dozen guests enter through the ground floor and are escorted to the dining room. On the mezzanine level, guests are seated on custom steel banquettes at tables with CNC-milled translucent acrylic tabletops, on carpet made of liquid non-absorbing merino wool. A curved, 26-foot-long art piece named “The Table” hangs suspended from the ceiling and delivers a memento to guests upon exit.
