Bellflower-based commercial construction and development firm Howard CDM is searching for a reliable Controller to join our Accounting/Finance Department. This is a great opportunity for an experienced accountant with a background in California construction who enjoys diving into the details of T-Charts, intercompany transactions, and business operations, to gain a better understanding of the overall business picture.

Details, details, details – this is a fast-paced environment in which juggling multiple projects, deadlines and entities comes with the territory; organization and prioritization is key! As our Controller, you’ll manage our accounting team while collaborating with and being mentored by two very seasoned principals. The candidate must possess a positive attitude and people skills, and be comfortable in an “all hands on deck” environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and mentor the accounting staff
  • Collaborate and act as an intermediary between the accounting staff and construction project management staff to ensure accurate and timely cost reporting
  • Produce financial statements, budgets, and specialized reporting for the construction firm as well as for several diverse entities such as real estate development entities, restaurants, property facilities management, and a non-profit
  • Responsible for all components of job costing and profitability analysis
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures while evaluating where improvements can be made – you get to make your mark on the organization and grow with us!

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or economics, and 7-10 years of relatable experience
  • Knowledge of California construction laws and regulations, and construction accounting experience
  • Experience in Sage 300
  • Ability to own the company’s general ledger, balance sheet, and income statement
  • Ability to prioritize and meet multiple project deadlines
  • Passion for growth and strong desire to succeed
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a variety of personalities
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including a high proficiency in Excel functions such as VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, etc.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage project development from initiation to closure; including costs, schedules, safety and closeout
  • Monitor quality assurance
  • Work with the client to outline scope, goals, deliverables, required resources, budget and timing
  • Develop, build and maintain a strong and professional relationship with owners, architects and subcontractors
  • Prepare RFP’s, level bids and negotiate costs
  • Prepare and manage project budget and schedule
  • Prepare and manage design and construction contracts
  • Track and report on project milestones and provide status reports to owner
  • Clearly communicate to team members and act as a mediator between stakeholders and the team
  • Lead, coach and motivate project team members
  • Develop tools and best practices for project management and execution
  • Ensure all documents are archived following project completion
  • Compile and process monthly progress billings, administering change orders
  • Overseeing the projects’ cost, schedules, safety and client satisfaction

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Construction Management, Building Construction, Civil Engineering or related field) or 7 years of position-related experience
  • Experience in dealing with subcontracts, subcontractors and self-perform work
  • Strong leadership abilities with the ability to coordinate work on multiple facets of a project
  • Effective presentation, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Good time management and multitasking abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Microsoft Project, and other project-related software such as Sage 300, BlueBeam and Procore
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial construction activities and business management, along with a working knowledge of state contractor’s license law, legal issues and safety standards

The Project Engineer will be responsible for evaluation of submittals and RFI’s to support construction activities and resolution of design and field issues.   • Assist the Project Manager and Superintendent in the development and management of projects
  • Work in conjunction with the coordination teams, management teams and field staff
  • General Contract and Subcontract administration
  • Construction scheduling
  • Material and equipment procurement and expediting
  • Shop drawing and submittal review and coordination
  • Project cost review, reporting, updating and accounting
  • Creation of RFI documents as needed
  • Create and maintain project meeting minutes and log
  • Review and negotiate change proposal pricing
  • Change order documentation and associated cost reporting and maintenance
  • Research and suggest options on construction means, methods and equipment

REQUIREMENTS

Howard CDM is seeking an experienced Estimator. We are looking for someone who will passionately help promote the development of creative solutions to construction challenges and enjoy the acquisition of winning profitable work. The Estimator will be responsible for preparing bids for all projects as well as aggressively follow up on the submitted bids and budgets until an award is determined. The Estimator will also be responsible for soliciting subcontractor participation in order to meet project requirements. The Estimator needs to be organized, an effective communicator, and can overcome project obstacles.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain high standards of professionalism and ethical behavior when representing the Company
  • Responsible for all aspects of estimating complex and large-scale jobs
  • Prepare cost estimates from preliminary information through construction documents (conceptual, preliminary, schematic, design development)
  • Compile lists of qualified bidders and convey invitations to bidders
  • Solicit and select subs for the size/scope of project
  • Review received bids and prepare total project costs
  • Quantify and price labor and materials
  • Have a thorough understanding of the scope of work to be bid
  • Follow up on submitted bids and budgets with client until an award has been determined
  • Set up and prepare cost estimate using internal estimating software
  • Attend job walks as required
  • Research and promote continuous improvement in developing more efficient estimating methods
  • Knowledgeable in pre-construction, hard bids, negotiated bids, budgets, general conditions, general requirements and value engineering
  • Support the project management team on subcontractor buyout as needed

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Must be familiar with both conceptual and self-perform estimating
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of verifiable experience in estimating commercial projects preferred
  • Understanding of market conditions on pricing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, BidMail and BlueBeam
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or related field
  • Experience with commercial ground-up projects, retail, fine dining, corporate tenant improvement, hospitality and multi-family

  • Acquire and manage all building permits and other regulatory prerequisites
  • Direct all field personnel to achieve completion of the project on schedule, within budget, and with quality workmanship that conforms to original plans and specifications
  • Prepare and maintain construction schedule
  • Order materials and schedule inspections as necessary throughout the process
  • Promote and ensure job site safety, encourage safe work practices and rectify job site hazards
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients, architects, subcontractors, suppliers and vendors
  • Clear ability to communicate effectively and consistently to the project management team
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops and assigned training
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned
